Professional Headshots with Suzanne Taylor Photography

While I have written about professional headshots before, I wanted to revisit the subject for the people that perhaps missed my last post about professional headshots and why if you don’t have some new updated images, how it can impact your business.

Why Professional Headshots Rather Than Your Online Dating Profile Picture from 2006.

It pained me to write that header…2006 does not seem that long ago.  I was a child of the ’80’s, and a teen of the ’90’s so even thinking of the early 2000’s feels like just a couple of years ago…not over 10.  I write about this point very specifically though because when I think of images of myself that I loved from my lifetime (as a photographer you think there would be tons), I think of my 20’s.  I was young, fresh, optimistic, still in University and living my life.  My body was in great shape (as opposed to the mess left by a single and then triplet pregnancy) and you just can’t beat the look of a human between the ages of 18-26.  Their skin isn’t sagging; their skin isn’t annoyed yet by life, wrinkles are in their infancy…those were the days.

To make my point, head on over to LinkedIn and take a peek at some of the ‘professional headshot’ images that come up as you randomly scroll through the site.  Yes – many people have taken the plunge or been lucky enough to have professional headshots provided by their job site – but regardless – aren’t those profiles a bit more appealing and professional then the picture with the rest of the wedding party cropped out of it?  How about the profile pictures where they are blurry, selective coloured (where some of the image is in black and white and the rest in colour) or my personal favourite – clearly drunk at a wedding, party or family barbeque.  You are a professional – you can do better.

Why Hiring a Portrait Photographer to take your Professional Headshots is Important

After being a professional photographer in the Red Deer area for the last almost 12 years, I have learned a lot professionally.  It takes a lot of experience and practice to become good at any profession, and I am thrilled that at this point in my career I have decided to open up my business to professional headshots for both the Red Deer and Calgary area.

You may wonder how hiring an award-winning portrait photographer will benefit your session.  At this point, if you have decided to invest in a professional headshot, there are a lot of companies out there that are happy to help you out – but what does Suzanne Taylor Photography bring to the table?

What I have seen over the years is that a lot of customers get a very standard photo when their professional headshots are taken by a domestic photography service that does not specialize in portraiture.  Think of it as a school photo – much like kids get taken in September every year they attend school.  The photographer is set up, you get a handful of pictures and you head off.  The picture is uniform and technically fine – but they don’t speak when you look at them.  They look nice, but often do not convey much emotion.  Part of every Professional Headshot session with Suzanne Taylor Photography is a questionnaire that allows you to speak to me so that I know the feeling you want your pictures to convey.  Do you want to look sincere?  Do you want to express trust or power?  Do you want to look in control or do you want to be viewed as gentle and warm?  These subtle differences in our faces and how our brains pick up those differences can mean a lot when it comes to a first impression.  The gentleman that was photographed in these images is a Financial Advisor from the ATB Stettler, Alberta location.  Rightly so, he wanted to look sincere, warm, trusting and knowledgeable.  Compare that to this Professional Headshot session, and you can see that while the undertones are the same, the dynamic of control is very different.
